SRI MAHA MARIAMMAN TEMPLE, BRAEMAR ESTATE, KAJANG, SELANGOR

History

The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is located in what used to be Braemar Estate, a rubber plantation in Kajang, a town South of Kuala Lumpur. It was part of the Hindu community in the former Braemar Estate. The Braemar Estate was acquired by Harrisons & Crosfield in the year 1907.

The development of the rubber estate land measuring about 700 acres was began in the early 1990’s which had turned the countryside surrounding to residential development township known as Saujana Impian, Kajang.

This is one of the oldest and still functioning Hindu Temples in Malaysia. The Temple is maintained on its original site since establishment though facing the risk of eviction and/or relocation due to development and change of ownership of the estate land.

Primary Deity
Mariamman (Tamil: மாரியம்மன்) meaning “mother” is the South Indian Hindu goddess of rain. Festivities for her occur during the late summer and early autumn. She is said to bring the rains and cure diseases.

Temple Administration
The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is managed by the Board of Committee of Persatuan Penganut Sri Maha Mariamman, Kajang, Selangor.

Festivals
The main Hindu festival celebrated at Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is Chitra Pournami. Chitra Pournami or Chitirai Purnima is a Tamil ceremony observed on the Poornima day (full moon day) in the Tamil month of Chitirai corresponding to the English months of April-May every year.
